The highly specialised products are vacuum-hardened and then deep-frozen. Depending on the material used, a mostly undesirable unstable phase remains in the steel after heat treatment - the retained austenite. The transformation of this phase by subsequent deep-freezing of the component serves to achieve the desired material properties and prevent structural changes during use.
